The 3 Big Myths About CHANGE

My husband is my teacher, my friend and someone who challenges me. And he instantly reacts when I bring up the idea of CHANGING something in our home or life. He’s a creature of habit. He likes things to stay the same. Change feels like more work for him. And you know, it makes sense to me how he feels.

Keeping things the way they are is less work. It makes us feel safe and structured. If I want to change myself or something in my life, it could feel disorientating, scary and overwhelming. And as a coach, I’m in the business of evolving (and constantly reinventing) myself so I can be the best coach for those who want to make a change. Basically, I have to walk the walk and talk the talk.

I’m a good listener. And I’ve been hearing 3 Big Myths about Change for years:

  1. Change is hard.
  2. Change takes a long time.
  3. I’ll have to Change myself in order to make Changes.

Oh my. Those are some heavy lifting statements. Where did those come from? And what happens if we believe them?

Repetition. Those are myths are based on what is shared again and again from our parents, our teachers or the media. As a mindset specialist, I understand the power of words to our brain. Words can enhance or they can disrupt. And if we believe CHANGE IS HARD (yikes as I typed that in big letters my mind froze up– see what I mean by the brain and words), then we won’t even attempt the smallest step because our mind is taking a step back.

So what do we do about these myths?

We start to poke holes in them. We see them as little munchkins, tiny and scared. We send them up to the sun and watch them dissolve into ash.

Then we get started on the work of changing ourselves. It all starts with belief.

When I hear the word change, I start to get excited. I start to feel wonder about what is possible. And that’s because over time I’ve learned that change is good for me. It has helped me grow and find new friends, new work and new clients and most of all, MYSELF!
